The SF Sketchfest Dozen: Joe DeRosa & Joe Zimmerman, Hosted by Kate Willett
The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars
SF Sketchfest presents a pairing from a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise: names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.

Writer, actor, and standup comedian Joe DeRosa has become a favorite on the comedy circuit. His brand of comedy mixing brutal honesty and frustration at the workings of the world has won over comedy fans, radio listeners, and TV audiences nationwide. In February 2013 Joe taped his second half hour special for Comedy Central, and in September of that year released his third standup comedy album “You Will Die.” His first two standup albums, “The Depression Auction” and “Return of The Son of The Depression Auction,” were released on Comedy Central records in 2010 and 2011 respectively. A fourth album, “Mistakes Were Made: The B-Sides” was released in August of 2014. DeRosa was a writer on Netflix’s highly anticipated "Wet Hot American Summer" TV series. He also wrote and was a featured performer on TBS’ acclaimed "The Pete Holmes Show." Online, Joe created, wrote, and starred in Bedrocket’s 2013 web series "We Should Break Up" and the Warner Brothers web series "What Are We Waiting For?" In 2011 he directed and, along with fellow comedians Bill Burr and Robert Kelly, co-wrote and starred in the short film "CHEAT," which premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival that year. Simon and Schuster released a book based on the film, which was written by the three, in October 2012. In recent years, DeRosa has been seen in a recurring role on AMC’s "Better Call Saul," and has made appearances on Comedy Central’s "Inside Amy Schumer," FX’s "Louie," HBO’s "Bored To Death," E’s "Chelsea Lately," and in the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Joe headlines comedy clubs and colleges both in and out of the country and has been featured repeatedly at renowned festivals like South By Southwest, The Montreal Comedy Festival, JFL 42, The Moontower Comedy Festival, The New York Comedy Festival, Gilda’s Laughfest, and Bonnaroo.

In 2013 Joe made his television debut on "John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show" on Comedy Central, and since then has appeared on "Conan," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," Season 8 of NBC’s "Last Comic Standing," Nickelodeon, and recorded a Comedy Central Half Hour Special. He was also chosen as one of the New Faces at Just For Laughs Montreal, where he was positively reviewed by the The Spit Take and Time Out NY. In 2014, he recorded his debut album, "Smiling at Wolves" which reached #2 on iTunes, and Buzzfeed named him a “Comedian you should be paying attention to,” saying “The combination of Joe’s calming vocalization and inventive writing is a thing of magic.” Praised for an accessible style pairing absurdism with observational and autobiographical
material, Joe is an original member of the Beards of Comedy, who toured from 2008-2012 and released two albums — 2011’s "Cardio Mix" & 2009’s "Comedy For People." Based out of New York city, Joe is currently touring the country with his new hour. He hosts popular science podcast called "Universe City" which comes out every Tuesday, and a monthly show at Union Hall in Brooklyn called “Deeperness”. Joe grew up in Morgantown, WV and graduated from Davidson College in 2005. $20 All Ages

Chris Gethard: Career Suicide / Bucky Sinister (SOLD OUT)
This show is sold out. Tickets may be available at the door night-of. See http://sfsketchfest.com/x/how-to-purchase/ for info.

Chris Gethard is the host of "The Chris Gethard Show," a stand up who’s had a half hour special on Comedy Central, and an actor seen in shows and movies like "Broad City," "The Office," "Parks and Recreation," "Louie," "Bored to Death," "The Heat," and "The Other Guys."

But he’s also someone who’s suffered from real depression issues for most of his life. And he’s written an hour of unapologetically funny stand up comedy focusing on everything that comes with that – suicide, alcoholism, and all the other funniest parts of life.

Performed at NYC venues such as the UCB Theater and Union Hall, this show was also an official selection of the Just for Laughs festivals in Montreal and Toronto. This performance marks its west coast debut.

“In this vessel, he achieves palpable moments of profoundness that could easily crash and burn on stage. The truth is, if you're making some of this stuff seem hilarious, as he does at times, you know what you're doing up there.” – exclaim.ca

“… an honest, raw and incredibly funny look at the absurdity and precariousness of life… In the tradition of Richard Pryor and Mike Birbiglia, Gethard transforms his life into storytelling art.” – NOW Magazine $20 All Ages

Brent Weinbach Presents Spotlight on The Andy Kaufman Award 2015 winner Brett Davis and finalists Jo Firestone, Ben Kronberg, and more, hosted by Brent Weinbach
Each year in New York City, a group of cutting-edge comedians compete for the Andy Kaufman Award, which showcases risk-taking and unconventional comedy acts. At this special event, the 2007 winner, Brent Weinbach, will perform and present the 2015 winner Brett Davis along with 2015 finalists Jo Firestone and Ben Kronberg.

Brent Weinbach is a winner and recipient of the Andy Kaufman Award, which is given out once a year to recognize innovation in stand-up comedy. He is also responsible for various internet video sensations such as "Gangster Party Line" as well as the cult web series, "Pound House."  Brent has appeared on "Conan," "Lopez Tonight," Comedy Central, HBO, IFC, ABC, and Adult Swim, and also toured with the Comedians of Comedy.

Brett Davis performs comedy under the guises of his many twisted characters, and on his public access variety show "The Special Without Brett Davis." He co-hosts the monthly extravaganza erroneously titled "The Macaulay Culkin Show" at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn, and the monthly "Lethal Lottery" at Over The Eight. He has also appeared on "The Chris Gethard Show," Adult Swim, MTV, "The Best Show on WFMU," numerous music videos and his film "Bananazzz."

Jo Firestone is a comedian and producer based in Brooklyn, NY. She creates and hosts several alternative comedy shows around the city, including "The Incredible Game Show Showcase," "Punderdome 3000," "Friends of Single People," "Firestone Success Academy," and "The Unexpectashow," among many others. Jo was recently named one of Brooklyn Magazine's 30 Under 30 and one of the Top Up and Coming Comedians on Splitsider. She is a regular contributor to "The Chris Gethard Show" on Fusion and "You're The Expert" on WBUR. Her radio show, "Dr. Gameshow," can be heard every Monday night from 6-7pm EST on WFMU.

Ben Kronberg combines clever one-liners and witty observations with catchy songs that he performs while playing instruments like the guitar, casio-keyboard and iPhone! Much of his material has been inspired by girlfriends, who are now incidentally ex-girlfriends. Since his breakout performance at the 2007 HBO Aspen Comedy Festival, Ben has performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "John Oliver's New York Stand-up Show," "Last Call with Carson Daly" and most recently his own Half Hour Special on Comedy Central. Comedy Central recently named Ben as one of the "Comics to Watch." SF Sketchfest Threesome: Michelle Buteau / Barry Rothbart / Seaton Smith, Hosted by David Gborie
SF Sketchfest presents a triple-co-headline of three of the best comics in the country.

Born in New Jersey to Caribbean parents, comedian/host/actress Michelle Buteau brings her unique perspective and big personality to stage and screen. As a comedian, she has toured the country performing at colleges, clubs, and festivals. Her television credits include "Enlisted" on FOX, Comedy Central’s "Key & Peele" and "@midnight." Michelle’s half hour special premiered on Comedy Central in September, and Comedy Central Records concurrently released her album, "Shut Up!," which is now available on iTunes.

Barry Rothbart has been a stand-up guest on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Conan," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," "Adam Devine’s House Party" on Comedy Central. He was named a “New Face” and “Best of the Fest” performer at the 2011 Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Fest, and was again honored at the festival in 2013 as one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch. Barry can be seen in Martin Scorsese’s "The Wolf of Wall Street" and Demetri Martin’s recent feature "Dean." He also stars in "300 Sunnyside," a Comedy Central digital series alongside Betsy Sodaro, Nick Rutherford, Chris Reinacher, and Brian Huskey. His album, "Streets of Fire," was recently released by ASpecialThing Records.

Seaton Smith is a comedian and actor. In late 2014, Seaton made his television debut as ‘Motif’ on Fox's "Mulaney." Soon after, in 2015, he had a breakout performance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers." He later appeared on "Inside Amy Schumer" and the fifth season of HBO's "Girls." He is a regular on Comedy Central's "Nightly Show." Vulture named him one of the 50 comedians you should know in 2015; "He's bursting with energy in a way that sets him apart in an overcrowded stand-up scene." In September 2015, under the legendary comedy record company New Wave, Seaton released his debut album, "Bologna Meat," which Laugh Button reviewed: “Smith’s humor is smart, energetic, and refreshingly clever as he fiddles with unique views on the world…he continuously brings something new and exciting to stale topics.” He’s performed at over 200 colleges across the country and he has headlined shows across the world, appearing in international comedy festivals such as Montreal Just For Laughs, Melbourne Comedy Festival, and the Iveagh Gardens Comedy Festival in Dublin.

Hosted by former Bay Area favorite David Gborie.

The SF Sketchfest Dozen: Tone Bell & Esther Povitsky, Hosted by Red Scott
The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars
SF Sketchfest presents a pairing from a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise: names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.

Having been here just over three years, Tone's first job in Hollywood was just when he joined Season Two of NBC's "Whitney" playing the role of RJ. The following year he starred in Fox's "To My Future Assistant" while continuing to tour and play gigs around the country as a standup. Tone starred as Tedward on NBC's "Bad Judge," and sold a show to FX that he Co-Created, is Writing, will Star in and Executive Produce. Additionally, Tone received his own 1⁄2 hour Stand-Up Special set to air on Comedy Central later this year. Currently, Tone is set to star as Russell in Will Packer & DJ Nash's new NBC show, "Truth Be Told".

A fixture of the LA comedy scene, Esther Povitsky co-created and starred in the MTV docu-comedy pilot "Little Esther," which chronicled her life as a young comic and her relationships with her mostly-male contemporaries. Esther also appeared in the New Faces Showcase at the 2013 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and will appear on the upcoming season of "Last Comic Standing." Esther hosts the popular podcast "Weird Adults with Little Esther" (featuring interviews with fellow comedians) and has a vibrant web presence. She recently partnered with Refinery29.com bringing her stage show “What’s in Your Bag” to the digital world. Esther has made guest appearances on FOX's "New Girl" as well as NBC's hit "Parks and Recreation" and most recently Netflix’s Judd Apatow produced series "Love." Esther can also be seen on the MTV sketch show "Hey Girl," as well as on Comedy Central's "Adam Devine's House Party" and "Brody Stevens: Enjoy It!"

The SF Sketchfest Dozen: Liza Treyger & Alice Wetterlund, Hosted by Joe Nguyen
The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars
SF Sketchfest presents a pairing from a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise: names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.

Liza Treyger is a Chicago-bred standup comic who now resides in NYC. She really misses alleys, her favorite bartenders, and her Russian parents. Liza’s Half Hour and first album will be released by Comedy Central in August 2015. She recently performed at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and has appeared on "Adam Devine's House Party" on Comedy Central, "Chelsea Lately" and is a cast member on MTV2's "Joking Off." She was thrilled to be a part of the New York Comedy Festival 2012 as one of Comedy Central's Comics to Watch (where she got to watch shows and eat cake balls with two professional wrestlers!). Check out her super cool web series "How Many Questions."

Alice Wetterlund has performed her non-yelling brand of comedy on stages such as Comix, Broadway Comedy Club, UCB theaters, San Francisco's Punchline and The Hollywood Improv, as well as critically-acclaimed shows including "College Humor Live," "Big Terrific," and "Meltdown." She has also performed nationally in festivals such as Bridgetown, Moon Tower and Women in Comedy, and frequently tours with Comedy Central on Campus and with Girl Code/Guy Code on Campus. She was a New Face for the 2013 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and was on the official line up for FOX’s 2013 Night of Comedy in Los Angeles. Her credits include guest stars on "New Girl" (FOX), "Betas" (Amazon original series), Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg’s "The Interview", and is currently recurring on "Silicon Valley" (HBO), "Girl Code" (MTV), and "@Midnight" (Comedy Central). Alice can be seen next summer starring alongside Zac Efron, Adam Devine and Anna Kendrick in the film "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates."

7 Minutes in Purgatory with Ian Abramson and guests Saurin Choksi, Adam Conover, Solomon Georgio, Caitlin Gill, Bobcat Goldthwait and Candy Lawrence
7 Minutes in Purgatory challenges comedians to perform directly to a camera alone in a soundproof room, while audience members watch a live feed in another room. This social experiment/comedy show offers a chance to watch performers hilariously and awkwardly attempt to do their act without the benefit of audience feedback.

The show is based in Los Angeles, and has featured guests like Hannibal Buress, Kyle Kinane, and Tig Notaro, and host/co-creator Ian Abramson has toured the show around the country, to cities like Chicago, Denver, and Atlanta. Josh Androsky quit high school early to pursue his love of television. By 20, he was a full time writer. When he was like 22 he wrote/produced FOX’s "New Year’s Eve Live." Weird, right? Scott Weiland was there and it went about the way you’d assume. At 23, Josh felt trapped, until he did his first open mic. He has since thrived in the LA comedy scene. He started a show on the steps of City Hall, ate shrooms and got weird as The Skateboard Rabbi on "The Price is Right," performed at festivals and venues across the nation, appeared on "This American Life," SyFy’s "Sharkmania," and contributes to VICE among other corporately-owned counterculture outlets. He has also recently started writing for TV that is supposed to be funny, like "Billy On The Street" and "Spongebob Squarepants," so his cat and girlfriend could not be happier for him.

Clare O’Kane is an actress, comedian and writer from San Jose, California. She has performed in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, and other wonderful, independent festivals around the country. She has been described as “sarcastic” and “half-Asian.” Clare is also one-third of the sketch group Blessed. They've made a couple of very funny videos, none of which have gone viral. The SF Sketchfest Dozen: Chris Cubas & Sarah Tiana, Hosted by Joe Gorman
The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars
SF Sketchfest presents a pairing from a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise: names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.

Chris Cubas is a stand up comedian based out of Austin, TX. Chris was one of the orginal members of the Altercation Comedy Tour, and his unique style has brought him to perform at festivals such as Fun Fun Fun Fest, SXSW, The Moontower Comedy & Oddities Festival, and Funny Or Die: Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival. In 2013 he was named a finalist in NBC's "Stand Up NBC" talent search and one of Comedy Central's 9 "Comics To Watch". After appearing a number of times on Doug Benson's hit podcast "Doug Loves Movies" Chris joined with Doug and Alamo Drafthouse to launch The Movie Interruption, a live weekly comedy show, in Kansas City, Mo. You may also have seen Chris win the internet as the first #PointsMe conestant on the hit Comedy Central series "@midnight."

Sarah Tiana has been a “working” comedian/ex-waitress in Los Angeles since 2003. Originally from Calhoun, GA, Sarah’s act emphasizes the thrills of growing up after “The War Of Northern Aggression” and trying to survive in the current battle of the sexes. She doesn’t call herself “single,” (she’s too old for that), she prefers to be called “sexually active.” Recently Sarah was seen as the red carpet host for "The Roast of Justin Beiber" (Comedy Central), as well as on the Roast-theme "@midnight" episode. Currently, she can also be seen as a series regular on "The Josh Wolf Show." Sarah’s big break came after she was recognized for her “breakout performance” as Carmen in four episodes of "Reno 911!’s" 7th season. In 2005 she helped create a sketch comedy company called The Strait Jacket Society as a way to help young actors in Hollywood accelerate their stage time and gain exposure while still having fun (she has currently put over 500 actors through the program). A downright ‘Merican, Sarah has done over 10 tours of comedy for the troops including Germany, Singapore, Afghanistan, Guam, Okinawa, and several Wounded Warrior Facilities. A trip to Iraq at the beginning of the war is highlighted in the documentary film, “We Love You Mrs. Bevins.” Sarah recently wrote and starred in “The Burn” with Jeffrey Ross for 2 seasons on Comedy Central. She is currently a correspondent on “The Soup Investigates” and was a regular on the “Chelsea Lately” roundtable. An avid sports fan Sarah wrote for the ESPY awards and the Rob Riggle NFL segments on Fox. She can also be seen at The World Famous Comedy Store, Twitter, and numerous unhealthy relationships in and around Los Angeles. She will never be seen in the three pilots she taped last year or be caught dead in the dress she wore on Craig Ferguson (it no longer fits). $20 All Ages

Alex Edelman: Millennial, with Sean Jordan
Last year, Alex Edelman, a New York-based, Boston-raised comedian, performed an hour-long show called Millennial at the Edinburgh Fringe. That hour won a Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer, revealed Edelman to the international stand-up community as one of its brightest young talents, and subsequently enjoyed nice runs and performances in London, Australia, New York, Los Angeles, and Sweden (!).

Edelman’s 2015 follow-up show, Everything Handed to You, has garnered even more unanimous acclaim. It sold out its entire run at this year’s Fringe and earned a bushel full of great reviews – it was the second best reviewed comedy show at the entire Festival – and its first work-in-progress performance, at the Leicester Comedy Festival, garnered Edelman a nomination for Best New Show.

Both of Edelman’s hours have examined his position amongst his peer group and he has written intelligently about Millennials in The Guardian, The Atlantic, among other places.

Also, some other credits if you need them: He’s been opening for Simon Amstell a bunch this past year, which was really fun even though Simon is vegan. He’s also opened for Patton Oswalt, and toured with Eddie Izzard in Berlin and Moscow (!). He was a New Face of Comedy at Just For Laugh’s Festival in Montreal – which is like a big deal to comedy people and apparently two of your cousins – and, TV-wise, he’s done a surprising amount of Australian stuff, been on Comedy Central’s "Comics To Watch" and "The John Bishop Show" recently. He wore a suit on the latter and his girlfriend said he looked handsome in his suit. $20 All Ages

The SF Sketchfest Dozen: The Next Wave of Stand-Up Comedy Stars
SF Sketchfest presents a pairing from a dozen hand-picked stand-up comedians on the rise: names you might not know now, but will be hearing a lot from soon.

Julian McCullough is a nationally-touring comedian and actor who can currently be seen as the co-host of "We Have Issues" on E! He has appeared on "Inside Amy Schumer" and co-starred with Whitney Cummings on the E! series "Love You, Mean It." Julian is a frequent panelist on "Chelsea Lately" and contributor to "The Soup Investigates." He also has his own "Comedy Central Presents" stand-up special and has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon." In addition to his television appearances, Julian has been featured at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and has also won the New York's Funniest Comedy Competition in 2008.

At the age of ten, Erica Rhodes started her entertainment career by voicing the conscience of legendary humorist and writer, Garrison Keillor on NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and has worked on that show ever since. She has performed on stage with Meryl Streep for PBS’ “A Prairie Home Companion Celebrates the 4th of July” special and co-starred with Martin Sheen when the famous radio show played L.A.’s Greek Theatre and Hollywood Bowl shows. Her work can also be heard on the Grammy-nominated album, “Garrison Keillor’s Comedy Theatre.” In 2012, she also became a writer for the show when it toured Houston, NYC and San Francisco.

Erica starred in the cult horror film "Plague Town" and recently wrapped a supporting role in "Play Nice," directed by Rodman Flender and starring Mary Lynn Rajskub. She also starred in "Big Sky," an indie road trip movie that followed a young couple's journey from L.A. to Montana. Erica co-created and starred in the award-winning web series "Apt. 45," but is probably best known for the character of Sandy in Iron Sink Media's web series "Upstairs Girls" and her own hit spin-off "Sandy's Channel." Collectively, those two web series have had an astonishing quarter billion hits. In 2011, Erica was nominated for an LA Comedy Award for "Most Hilarious Leading Actress in a Web Series." She produced and starred (with Ray Wise and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland) in the short film Posey which premiered at the 2013 Idyllwild Cinema Fest and made the festival rounds, garnering many awards. Erica was also nominated by the 2015 Los Angeles Short Film Festival as “Best Actress” for her work in "The Platinum Plan." Recent TV credits include Fox’s "New Girl", IFC’s "Comedy Bang Bang" and Comedy Central’s "Why? With Hannibal Buress." Erica has also guested on "The Howard Stern Wrap-up Show" on Sirius XM after being named on his site as number one of the top nine comics to watch.

Erica co-hosts Bil Dwyer's "Stardumb!," a game and talk show comedy hybrid that has sold out three times at SF Sketchfest, and stars major guest comedy players like Zach Galifianakis, Simon Helberg, Oscar Nunez, Adam Scott, Mike White, and Maria Bamford. She is also a fast-rising standup comic with appearances on AXS’ "Live at Gotham" and the syndicated "Comics Unleashed." SOLD OUT --  Tickets may be available at the door night-of. See http://sfsketchfest.com/x/how-to-purchase/ for info.

Dr. Katz Live is a stage variation of the animated show, Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, created by Jonathan Katz and Tom Snyder for Comedy Central. It premiered in 1995, earning the network its first Emmy and Peabody awards and introducing the term “squigglevision” to the English language. The show has rightfully gone on to become a cult classic.
