A Night with John Lurie in conversation with Parker Posey: 'Fishing with John' 25th Anniversary
Artist/Actor/Composer John Lurie comes to the Castro Theatre to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Fishing with John," with screenings and an in-depth conversation with acclaimed actor Parker Posey.

For all his life, John Lurie has been drawing and painting, yet only in the last eleven years has he chosen to exhibit his work. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1952, John Lurie remains a true American original.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Lurie led the legendary band, The Lounge Lizards, which Lester Bangs of The New York Times proclaimed as "staking out new territory that lies somewhere west of Charles Mingus and east of Bernard Hermann." In addition, he recorded 22 albums and over 20 film scores including The John Lurie National Orchestra's Men With Sticks and movie soundtracks for over 20 films, the most notable being "Stranger than Paradise," "Down by Law," "Mystery Train," "Manny and Lo," "Clay Pigeons," "Animal Factory," and "Get Shorty," which earned him a Grammy nomination.

In 1999, Lurie created the fictional character Marvin Pontiac and recorded The Legendary Marvin Pontiac - Greatest Hits CD for his own label, "Strange and Beautiful Music". Marvin Pontiac was said to be an insane African musician, who would only record for a label if its president came out and mowed his lawn. Pontiac was later hit and killed by a bus, outside the Esmeralda State Mental Institution.

As an actor, he had starring roles in "Stranger than Paradise" and "Down by Law." This led to appearances in numerous films with some of the world's foremost directors: Wim Wenders’ "Paris, Texas," Martin Scorsese’s "The Last Temptation of Christ," David Lynch’s "Wild at Heart," as well as a regular role on the HBO series "Oz."

Following his work in film, Lurie went on to write, direct, and star in the critically acclaimed television series "Fishing with John," which aired on IFC and Bravo. Episodes included guests such as Tom Waits, Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon, Jim Jarmusch and Dennis Hopper. According to the critic Glenn O'Brien, "Lurie elevates this venerable institution to a whole new level, doing for the American fishing format what Cézanne did for the still life."

In spring 2004, Lurie had his first painting exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery, New York. Since then Lurie’s work has been exhibited in esteemed galleries throughout the world. His solo museum exhibits include P.S.1. Contemporary Arts Center in New York, Musee Des Beaux-Arts De Montreal, the Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, who gave their entire museum to the presentation of Lurie's work. Both the Wadsorth Athenaeum in Connecticut and The Museum of Modern Art in New York have acquired his work for their permanent collections.

Lurie has published two books of his work, "Learn To Draw," a compilation of black and white drawings and most recently A Fine Example of Art, a full color book of over 80 reproductions.

John Lurie's drawings and paintings express a disarming mixture of corrosive wit, raw emotion and unblemished sensitivity. His works bear the mark of an outsider, a quality present throughout his idiosyncratic career. To quote the artist: "I like to draw and paint. It is a river to me. I am not an Indian." $25 All Ages

The Chris Gethard Show Presents: Chris Gethard versus Vacation Jason in a Literal Fight to the Death!
The Chris Gethard Show Presents: Chris Gethard versus Vacation Jason in a Literal Fight to the Death!

"The Chris Gethard Show" is a strange late night cable talk show that bends the borders of what a talk show is even allowed to be. Fans of TCGS are rabid, passionate devotees to this public access born televised mayhem.

Fans of TCGS will also tell you that the eponymous host of the show has a mortal enemy – Vacation Jason, the island hopping, fruit loving madman who is always on vacation and thwarts Chris at every turn possible. Much to Chris’s consternation, Vacation Jason is a crowd favorite amongst the TCGS dedicated. His popularity rivals that of the host himself – some might say it even exceeds it.

After many, many years of these two non-titans battling publicly on the cable airwaves, things are finally set to come to a head on Friday, January 8th at 10 PM at the Brava Theater. Geth and Jason will face each other in a series of challenges with the assistance of you, the audience. Murf will be on hand to referee the proceedings and insure that they get out of control. The Human Fish will oversee everything with his watchful amphibious eyes. And the LLC will rock out while it all happens.

And at the end, one of these men will have won the majority of the challenges. And both have agreed that at that point, the other will be exterminated on stage. It will be like Hamilton versus Burr, except comedy serves as the duel and we are 85% certain no one will ever write a Broadway musical about the events that occur on this evening.

We sincerely hope to see you there! $28 All Ages

SF Sketchfest Tribute to 'Bob's Burgers' with Loren Bouchard, Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, John Roberts and Kristen Schaal, moderated by Tim Goodman (SOLD OUT)
SOLD OUT --  Tickets may be available at the door night-of. See http://sfsketchfest.com/x/how-to-purchase/ for info.

After hosting a "pre-union" before the show had ever aired, SF Sketchfest is thrilled to present a tribute to the hilarious show "Bob's Burgers!"

"Bob's Burgers," the 2014 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Animated Program, returns for a well-done sixth season. The critically acclaimed series was nominated for two 2015 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance (John Roberts).

The series follows BOB (H. Jon Benjamin), who runs Bob’s Burgers with the help of his wife and their three kids. Bob has big ideas about burgers, but the rest of the clan falls short on service. Despite the greasy counters and lousy location, the Belchers are determined to make every “Grand Re-Re-Re-opening” a success.

In addition to Bob, the increasingly popular Belcher family includes his charming and musical wife, LINDA (John Roberts); their eldest and slightly awkward daughter, TINA (Dan Mintz); goofy and whimsical middle child, GENE (Eugene Mirman); and cunning and clever youngest daughter, LOUISE (Kristen Schaal).

In the upcoming sixth season, during which the series will celebrate its 100th episode, Tina vandalizes her school; the family investigates a haunted house; the kids open a fake law firm; Aunt Gayle’s (guest voice Megan Mullally) mystery boyfriend is introduced; and Bob starts to lose his mustache hair! Upcoming guest voices include Jenny Slate, Billy Eichner, Steve Buscemi, Wanda Sykes, Henry Winkler, Tim Meadows, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele and Zach Galifianakis.

"Bob's Burgers" is a 20th Century Fox Television and Bento Box Entertainment production. The series was created by Loren Bouchard (“Home Movies”). Bouchard and Jim Dauterive (“King of the Hill”) serve as executive producers and writers. $30 All Ages

SOLD OUT --  Tickets may be available at the door night-of. See http://sfsketchfest.com/x/how-to-purchase/ for info.

Dr. Katz Live is a stage variation of the animated show, Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, created by Jonathan Katz and Tom Snyder for Comedy Central. It premiered in 1995, earning the network its first Emmy and Peabody awards and introducing the term “squigglevision” to the English language. The show has rightfully gone on to become a cult classic.

The live version (much like the cartoon version) of Dr. Katz, brings well-known standups to the good doctor’s couch, using the quirks and idiosyncrasies of their comedy acts to analyze their various conflicted issues.
$35 All Ages

Due to a change in her schedule, Chelsea Peretti will no longer be appearing.
